Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's Historic Visit to Brunei Darussalam on  3-4 September, 2024 : A Landmark in India-Brunei Relations

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, embarked on a historic visit to Brunei Darussalam from 3-4 September, 2024. This landmark journey marks the first-ever bilateral Official Visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Sultanate, coinciding perfectly with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei Darussalam.

Upon arrival in Bandar Seri Begawan, Prime Minister Modi was graciously received with a ceremonial welcome by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam. This warm reception underscores the mutual respect and understanding that defines the relationship between the two nations.

Recognizing Brunei as an essential partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and its vision for the Indo-Pacific region, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the mutual benefits stemming from this visit. He further underscored the significance of Brunei in not only bilateral cooperation but also within regional and multilateral frameworks.

A highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the new Chancery premises of the High Commission of India in Brunei Darussalam on 3 September. Prime Minister Modi lit a ceremonial lamp and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion, engaging with members of the Indian community present at the event. He acknowledged their invaluable contribution as a living bridge between India and Brunei Darussalam, playing a pivotal role in cultivating stronger bilateral ties.

On the same day, the Prime Minister Modi visited the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, where he was warmly received by Brunei's Minister of Religious Affairs, H.E. Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin, along with the Minister of Health, Dato Dr. Haji Mohammad Isham, and many members of the Indian community.

On 4 September, Prime Minister Modi had a significant meeting with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the Istana Nurul Iman. Expressing gratitude for the royal invitation, Prime Minister Modi remarked that this unprecedented visit signifies India's commitment to enhancing bilateral ties within the framework of the ‘Act East Policy.’ Both leaders discussed various topics, including defence cooperation, trade and investment, food security, education, energy, and health, committing to explore collaboration in emerging sectors like ICT, fintech, and renewable energy.

The talks culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the operation of Telemetry, Tracking, and Telecommand Station for Satellite and Launch Vehicles. The leaders also announced the forthcoming commencement of direct flight connections between Bandar Seri Begawan and Chennai, further facilitating people-to-people exchange.

During a gracious official lunch hosted by His Majesty, the two leaders reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism and enhancing the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Modi invited His Majesty to visit India, paving the path for deeper bilateral engagement and cooperation.

The groundwork laid during this historic visit symbolizes a new chapter in India-Brunei Darussalam relations and demonstrates a shared vision for a collaborative future in the Indo-Pacific landscape.
